Strategies for controlling lighting in office spaces

For proper implementation and use of an automation system, an important step is the preliminary collection and analysis of data to identify the potential for positive changes. The effectiveness of the implemented system is determined by the quality of interpretation of the source data.

Depending on the tasks, the set of initial data for analysis varies. The following types of approaches are possible [2]:
– analysis of the functioning of systems inside a building over time;
– analysis of the nature of use of a building or a separate space within a building;
– analysis of the influence of climatic conditions and geographical location of the building on the functioning of systems.

Preliminary analytics is important because it allows you to manage the building’s operating systems as a whole more effectively, including the lighting system, which accounts for about 10% of the total load [3]. Data analysis plays an important role in optimizing operations, increasing energy efficiency, and creating comfortable conditions.

 

Comprehensively at the building level

To implement a strategy for managing systems within a building to potentially improve efficiency, the following key aspects of analysis can be identified [5]:
– Energy monitoring: analyze energy usage data to identify patterns in terms of periods of peak demand;
– Fault detection and diagnosis: Identifying anomalies or malfunctions in systems such as lighting control and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning);
– Occupancy analytics: Using sensor data to understand occupancy patterns, optimize lighting, HVAC and other services based on real-time demand rather than fixed schedules;
– Space utilization analysis: examines space utilization data to optimize office layout, improve workspace efficiency, and adapt to changing occupancy requirements;
– Comfort monitoring: Uses sensors to assess indoor environmental conditions.

Using building analytics as a single system, you can make informed decisions to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and create a comfortable and sustainable environment. The figure shows an example of system parameters, taking into account which allows one to assess the environmental conditions inside the premises based on sensor data – and, based on the information received, to create comfortable conditions for being inside the office.

 

At the level of a single office space

Strategies for controlling lighting in office spaces may include the following approaches and combinations thereof:
In terms of the functioning of systems within the building:

– Centralized control systems: the use of centralized lighting control systems as part of a wider building management system, allowing lighting to be monitored, analyzed and adjusted in conjunction with other systems.

 

In terms of the nature of space utilization:

– Space zoning through lighting: dividing office space into zones with separate lighting controls to regulate it depending on activity and occupancy in each zone;
– Scheduled lighting: implementation of preset lighting schedules depending on working hours with automatic on/off or dimming settings;
– Personalized control interfaces: Provide employees with personalized control interfaces, such as mobile apps, that allow them to adjust the lighting conditions in their workspace based on their personal preferences.

 

In terms of analyzing the influence of geographical location and climatic conditions [7]

– Analysis and collection of data on natural light patterns: analysis of office space layout, modeling of changes in natural light, integration of sensors to assess the level of natural light and adjust artificial lighting accordingly.

The figure shows an example of a system for optimizing processes in open offices, which collects data on environmental conditions and allows, based on them, to generate analytical reports for further decision-making on optimization.

The combination of different approaches creates a dynamic and adaptive lighting environment within an office space that optimizes energy use, maintains optimal lighting levels, promotes a comfortable work environment, and can be integrated with other building systems to form complex strategies. An important stage in the implementation of management strategies both at the building level in an integrated manner and at the level of an individual system is preliminary data analytics. The quality of the analytics determines the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.
