SMART CITY. SMART TECHNOLOGIES

Key concepts and main characteristics of a smart city, as well as its tasks

WHAT DOES TERN “SMART CITY” MEAN?
The basic and simplistic interpretation would be a highly intelligent and efficient city. According to Wikipedia, a smart city is a vision of urban development that involves integrating multiple information and communication technology (ICT) and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions in a secure manner to manage a city’s assets.
According to the concept, Smart City must help people in various ways – improve safety, reduce the number of traffic jams, facilitate the tasks of organizing the management of services and payments, etc. A Smart city, to a certain extent, can be represented as a system in which such areas of information and communication technologies and IT operate in a complex, including cloud applications of the Internet of Things (IoT).
It is believed that the goal of a “Smart City” is to improve the city and create comfortable living conditions for citizens. However, a smart city can mean different things to different individuals based on their perceptions, experiences, geographic location, and expectations. Nevertheless, the term and concept are rapidly evolving alongside technological advancements and real-world testing.

In 2008, as part of the Smart Planet educational program, IBM introduced a scheme for developing new cities, and it was then that the idea of a “Smart City” became widely known. Due to the constant growth of the population, it is necessary to develop global digital functional systems that will help to ensure a high standard of living.
IT companies from South Korea, the UAE, and China were among the first to support this concept and begin its development. The city of Songdo in South Korea became the first real Smart City. Programs for the development of Smart Cities can be found in different countries of the world, including Russia.

The implementation of the Smart City concept in the Russian Federation began in 2018, after the adoption of the standard by the Ministry of Construction. The development of Smart City includes various areas such as public and environmental safety, housing and communal services, communication networks, etc. In addition to large million-plus cities, the Smart City concept is being implemented in other Russian cities with a population of up to 100 thousand people.

SMART LIGHTING IN SMART CITIES
Modern cities do not exist without lighting and lighting solutions. Smart cities mean Smart lighting, which can be connected, for example, to the Internet of Things (IoT).
Smart lighting in the urban environment implies not only energy-efficient solutions and a lighting control system (for each individual luminaire or group), but also the ability to adapt to the needs of users and the current situation, and compliance with current regulations. Smart lighting can integrate with other Smart City systems, such as CCTV systems or motion sensors, allowing lights to automatically turn on when someone approaches, ensuring safety and preventing potential crimes.
Smart lighting is a stand-alone system that provides network infrastructure and data to connect to networked control systems.

SMART CITY TECHNOLOGIES
“Smart city” is a combination of several technologies. Below are the most common Smart city technologies:
– Internet of Things (IoT)
– Artificial Intelligence (AI)
– Wireless network
– Big Data
– Cloud computing

ADVANTAGES OF SMART CITY
