The new Kamala Theater building in Kazan has won the International Architecture Awards, one of the most prestigious global awards in architecture and urban planning. The results were announced by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design:

Ten projects from Russia were included in the list. The Kamala Theater is nominated in the “Museums and Cultural Centers” category. Other projects on the list include the Brumadinho Memorial in Brazil, the WAAKA Cultural Center in Australia, the National Medal of Honor Museum in the United States, the Park1538 cultural complex in South Korea, and other buildings.

The building’s architectural design is inspired by a rare natural phenomenon—the “ice flowers” that appear on Kaban Lake. The cold exterior faсade contrasts with the warm, golden interiors, decorated with Tatar ornaments designed by Honored Artist of the Republic of Tatarstan Nailya Kumysnikova.
The concept of the new theatre involves the harmonization of nature, culture and the urban environment of Kazan, therefore it is based on the characteristic symbols of the city. The triangular elements of the facade are inspired by two images at once – from nature and culture. These are, first of all, “ice flowers” – a unique natural phenomenon characteristic of Lake Kaban. At the same time, the triangular elements also refer to the original building of the Kamal Theatre with its recognizable facade.
