LIGHTING DESIGN FOR SPORTS

LIGHTING DESIGN SOLUTIONS FOR SPORTS AND WELLNESS INDUSTRY

Sports facilities are different. Some of them are for professional athletes and competitions, others are available to the public – to everyone who takes care of their health or is fond of any kind of sport.
The recent situation with COVID-19 has shown how health is important for a person, how important it is to be able to go in for sports and lead an active lifestyle. For those ones who are not professional athletes, but who care about their figure and well-being, you can find fitness clubs and sports centers of various levels in almost any city in our country. Premium clubs offer their clients a wide variety of services and activities, as well as the maximum convenience of using infrastructure and services. Other parameters that distinguish the premium segment are location, architecture and interior design, sports equipment, climate, lighting, sound, multimedia solutions. Together, all these factors help to create an attractive environment that customers choose for themselves.

LET’S FIND OUT WHAT ROLE DOES LIGHTING PLAY IN THE WELLNESS INDUSTRY:

1. FUNCTIONAL
First of all, the task of artificial lighting is to provide the necessary lighting conditions for the performance of functional tasks, safety and comfort.
There are numerous functional areas in the fitness clubs’ interiors: reception, training rooms, locker rooms and showers, massage rooms, medical staff and coaching, game and training areas, cafes, relaxation rooms, swimming pools, etc. Depending on the types of activity and actions performed, the norms establish different levels of illumination and uniformity for different rooms. But in addition to tasks related to the visual comfort of users, there are specific tasks often arise in the choice of equipment in the wellness industry facilities’ interiors. For all areas with a special microclimate – swimming pools, showers, various types of saunas and baths, etc. – it is necessary to consider the degree of moisture protection and heat resistance of luminaires, as well as special requirements for electrical safety when equipment comes into contact with water.
While designing lighting for a multifunctional interior, a lighting designer must develop an optimal lighting solution that meets established standards, corresponds to the design concept and architectural features, and meets the requirements of electrical safety and energy efficiency.

2. IMAGE / STATUS
The lighting solution is an integral part of interior design and architectural solutions. On the one hand, lamps form visual image because they are the part of the subject content of the interior, on the other hand, the perception of space in the dark is completely dependent on artificial light. For lighting, both standard models of luminaires can be used, and special products of non-standard sizes, capacities, colors or shapes can be developed.
For example, network sports clubs will seem familiar to visitors, regardless of their location. And this is due not only to the design and color schemes of the interior, but also to the lighting techniques and luminaries that are used there.
Premium class clubs take care of their customers, thinking about the smallest details, which determines the level of service and the institution. It is comfortable for visitors to work out in such interiors, glare and reflections are minimized, the light environment creates conditions when a person feels in good shape and is ready for active training, and in recreation areas it helps to relax and encourages easy communication.

3. DECORATIVE / AESTHETIC
Light also performs a decorative function in addition to functional lighting in modern interiors. Visual perception and aesthetics are important for creating an inviting atmosphere. Often in the wellness industry they use dynamic and colored lighting, lighting scenarios and control systems. Intelligent systems and colored light help diversify the perception of space, shape the day or evening look of the interior, create a relaxing environment, for example, in yoga and meditation classes. Even banal running on tracks will become more interesting in new non-standard light conditions.
Spaces that transform in accordance with human needs or specific tasks have become a new reality in the modern world of technology. Lighting control systems and automation are indispensable tools for designers and architects to help in organization the space for action and relaxation.

4. EMOTIONAL
Light influences the formation of the emotional environment. A person tends to return to those places where he receives positive emotions. Therefore, by creating suitable lighting conditions in the interior of a wellness industry facility, you can turn it into a place of attraction. The task of a lighting designer is to create an environment where a person experiences positive emotions, gets distracted from the routine and plunges into another world – the world of sports, health, psychological and emotional comfort.

Lighting design for the wellness industry is a challenge for experienced lighting designers and engineers. The introduction of systems that combine such functions as management, security, video surveillance and access control, climate, lighting, curtain and blind control, multimedia, engineering systems dispatching, visualization of control systems will make the work of employees easier and simpler, and the life of visitors – better and more enjoyable.
