Project details

Gorky Park in Moscow was designed as an exhibition of industrial achievements; therefore, it has always remained the place where was presented advanced and experimental architecture. The Nine Box MSK, located in the park, continues the original concept of this place. It promotes the popularization of sports, the active lifestyle of the townspeople and is a continuation of the sports infrastructure of the park. Nine Box MSK is a comprehensive solution - it is football and streetball grounds, yoga grounds, a base for the Nike Running Club, as well as a cultural and creative center.
The Nike BOX MSK design is the result of a competition organized by Nike and Strelka KB in 2017. The winner was a concept from KOSMOS Architects. The appearance of the building is a utilitarian, anonymous and infrastructural architecture. Membranes are the inspiration for the building. Therefore, the structure with a metal grill turned out to be light, transparent, modular. The metal grid functions as a membrane between the park and the interior.

Lighting
The main task in the Nike Box MSK project, where people go in for sports even in the evening, was to create comfortable lighting, both inside and outside the facility.
To highlight the original metal structure, were used lighting devices with different optics: elliptical - for precise illumination of the visor and wide - for the lower part of the pavilion and the adjacent territory.
The metal structure of the building allows natural light to pass through during the day. Thanks to this openwork solution, trees can grow through the structure. Therefore, on sunny days, their shade provides protection from the sun, and also creates a natural decorative cut-off pattern on the facade.
The interior space of the pavilion is lit evenly, providing the necessary level of illumination for a comfortable stay of visitors. In the dark, light locally spreads from the interior to the exterior, denoting the elements of the facade of the structure without unnecessary exposure. Thus the structure becomes a holistic image.
