7 trends in interior lighting

THERE ARE CERTAIN LIGHTING TRENDS IN MODERN INTERIORS AND SPACES, WE WILL TELL YOU ABOUT THEM IN DETAILS

Light plays an important role in architecture as it determines the overall atmosphere of interiors and influences the visual comfort of users. Lighting systems of the present time have stepped over the limits of their primary function thanks to innovative technologies, concern for the environment and nature, trends in architecture and design. Light has become a design strategy, a statement of sorts that maximizes the functional and aesthetic qualities of a space.
As for the question of how interiors will be illuminated in a few years, foreign experts say that innovations related to materiality can be expected. For example, the use of organic materials to produce light, the connection of light fixtures to special devices to increase convenience and save energy, and even return to the simplest natural forms are mentioned.

7 trends in interior lighting noted by foreign colleagues:

1 – Sculptural lighting
2 – Smart LED
3 – Atmospheric lighting
4 – Mood and well-being lighting
5 – Light spatial contours
6 – Skylights
7 – Neon

Let us tell you about each of them below.

1. Sculptural lighting
Carefully crafted design has been at the forefront of trends over the past few years. Organic and sculptural forms, inspired by natural silhouettes and maximalist movements, were widely used in interiors, furniture, and decoration. Lighting artists adopted this “exaggerated” design language and began to perceive lighting equipment not just as a source of light, but as a tool with which to express themselves.

2. Smart LED
Knowing that 3D printing encourages experimentation with innovative shapes, structures and materials, designers are now combining 3D printed structures with LED lighting, expanding the possibilities of interior design. Smart LED systems are more convenient, more flexible in settings and more energy efficient than traditional lighting systems. For example, LED strips can be integrated into the wall. With the help of control systems, RGB luminaires can change the colors of the light, shimmer with gradients, and also present impressive dynamic lighting scenarios.

3. Atmospheric lighting
The task of atmospheric lighting (decorative or “mood light”) is to make the interior space perceived both physically and emotionally. By using different colors and shades, as well as varying the intensity, you can create unique lighting scenarios that define the perception of space, enhancing the effect of the storytelling of architecture.

4. Mood and well-being lighting
Human centric lighting helps to create spaces that promote emotional, mental, and physical well-being. HCL are biodynamic artificial lighting systems that imitate the natural dynamics of the light environment (changing the color shade of light and its intensity in dynamics). Biodynamic lighting can positively affect well-being and work capacity, which is especially important in rooms with a lack of daylight, as well as in the autumn-winter period, when we feel lack of natural light.

5. Light spatial contours
Thanks to modern LED technologies, designers have the opportunity to create continuous lines of light and use them to form paths and directions of movement. Thus, the lamps can perform such a function in addition to the main one. The configurations of modern lighting systems are diverse – it is possible to create continuous light lines on different surfaces of space: on the floor, wall, and ceiling.

6. Skylights
It’s obvious that of all types of lighting, natural light contributes the most to a person’s emotional and physical well-being. Unfortunately, not every interior has windows and access to natural light. For such cases, there is already a lighting solution that solves the problem – these are skylights. Light panels of different sizes are built into the ceiling surface, thus simulating the effect of natural light.

7. Neon
One of the main interior trends of 2021 and 2022 was neon lighting. People attribute the rise in popularity of neon to social media, when during the pandemic, people showed their creativity in different ways and shared the results of their creations in social media. The flexibility of the material, the variety and reference to retro aesthetics allowed neon to be assessed with a fresh look. Neon light in the interior can act as a light source, be an original decorative element or an inscription. It also creates a special emotional atmosphere.
